Terms Aims and objectives
Garbetts is an accountancy firm based on the Isle of Wight .
Their I.T. systems include a central Microsoft Windows 2000 Small Business Server, and over 20 Workstations. This main server acts as the central file store for the company, and provides email through Microsoft Exchange Server. A large part of Garbetts communication with clients is conducted digitally, and email is a vital part of day to day business.
In Early March 2003 a serious hardware error developed in the main server. An Emergency replacement had to be sourced and installed.

Key Requirements :

Minimise downtime
System restored in identical configuration, no end user differences in usage.
No loss of data.

Process
As Garbetts is a customer supported by a Maintenance agreement with PC Consultants, regular server health-checks are performed. During these visits information about a server and configuration are recorded. Combined with other processes employed by PC Consultants, this information constitutes the basis of a Server Disaster Recovery Plan.

Planned deliverables
Source suitable Server hardware system.
Re-install basic server from original installation media.
Restore Garbetts data and configuration from backup tapes.
Test server and workstation functionality.

Outcomes/achievements
The server was replaced and all data restored within a few days of the original problem being identified. Downtime was kept to an absolute minimum as we were able to prolong the life of the original server while the new server was prepared.
Garbetts were able to continue working during the server work, and no loss of data occurred.
All requirements lay out by Garbetts and PC Consultants were met during this project.
